Education

Education

Education is the single greatest tool for achieving social justice and equality. Education is also critical to achieving an inclusive and equitable society in which every citizen has the opportunity to dream, thrive, and contribute to his/ her community and homeland.

Education is a fundamental human right, and it is the key to economic and social development. Despite its importance, the quality of education in rural areas of India has been a concern for several decades. Many children in rural areas face challenges such as poverty, lack of infrastructure, inadequate trained teachers, and limited access to quality education.

HVT’s initiatives on education will be driven by the curricular framework and pedagogical structure for school education as proposed in National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

HVT Projects

Fundamental principles that will guide HVT’s education related initiatives

  • Recognizing, identifying, and fostering the unique capabilities of each student, by sensitizing teachers as well as parents to promote each student’s holistic development in both academic and non-academic spheres.
  • Target to achieve Foundational Literacy and Numeracy for all students by Grade 3.
  • Flexible education methods, so that learners have the ability to choose their learning trajectories and programmes, and thereby choose their own paths in life as per their talents and interests.
  • Adopt experiential learning in all stages, including hands-on learning, arts and sports-integrated education, story-telling-based pedagogy, and explorations of relations among different subjects.
  • Multi-disciplinarity and a holistic education with no hard separations between arts and sciences, between curricular and extra-curricular activities, between vocational and academic streams, etc.
  • Emphasis on conceptual understanding rather than rote learning and learning-for-exams.
  • Creativity and critical thinking to encourage logical decision-making and innovation.
  • Ethics and human & constitutional values like empathy, respect for others, cleanliness, courtesy, democratic spirit, spirit of service, respect for public property, scientific temper, liberty, responsibility, pluralism, equality, and justice.
  • Introduce and integrate vocational education in secondary schools. Collaborate with ITIs, polytechnics, local industry, etc. to set up Skill labs in schools.
  • Life skills such as communication, behavioural, cooperation, teamwork, and resilience.
  • Focus on regular formative assessment for learning rather than the summative assessment Align the assessment tools with the learning outcomes, capabilities, and dispositions for each subject of a given class.
  • Use of digital platforms and ICT-based educational initiatives for providing quality education and for greater outreach.
  • Keep Teachers as the heart of the learning process – their continuous professional advancement, identify and develop local talent, continuously train them to excel in both online and offline teaching techniques and create a progressive environment for their recognition and growth.
  • Continuous review of progress and regular intervention and assessment by educational experts.

HVT’s Partners School

HVT’s Focus Areas

Education-1

Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)

HVT’s vision for this sector is to provision quality early childhood development, care, and education (ECCE) to young children, particularly children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The overall aim will be to attain optimal outcomes in the domains of: physical and motor development, cognitive development, socio-emotional-ethical development, cultural/artistic development, and the development of communication and early language, literacy, and numeracy.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

A large number of students currently in elementary school have not attained foundational literacy and numeracy, i.e., the ability to read and comprehend basic text and the ability to carry out basic addition and subtraction with Indian numerals.

HVT will have increased focus on foundational literacy and numeracy – and generally, on reading, writing, speaking, counting, arithmetic, and mathematical thinking – throughout the preparatory and middle school curriculum, with a robust system of continuous formative/adaptive assessment to track and thereby individualize and ensure each student’s learning.

Curtailing Dropouts

The data for later grades indicates some serious issues in retaining children in the schooling system – indicating that a significant proportion of enrolled students drop out after Grade 5 and especially after Grade 8.

One of the primary goals of HVT will be ensure that children are enrolled in and are attending school. HVT’s top priority will also be to bring these children back into the educational fold as early as possible, and to prevent further students from dropping out.

We will ensure this by providing effective and sufficient infrastructure so that all students have access to safe and engaging school education.

Adult Education

Literacy and basic education open up whole new worlds of personal, civic, economic, and lifelong-learning opportunities for individuals that enable them to progress personally and professionally.

At the level of society and the nation, literacy and basic education are powerful force multipliers which greatly enhance the success of all other developmental efforts. HVT’s focus will be to provide equal opportunity to every individual to attain foundational literacy, obtain an education, and pursue a livelihood.

Teacher Training

Teachers in rural areas often lack training and experience, leading to poor quality teaching. Regular training sessions for teachers can help improve their teaching skills and knowledge, leading to better learning outcomes for students.

Engage trained and qualified Volunteers with experience and interest in teaching to ensure schools have regular trained volunteers as teachers for every class and at each stage.

We would like to collaborate with Schools (private/ aided or government run) in the remotest of the Himalayan region and work alongside them in fulfilling their vision.

To strengthen our efforts, we are also looking for Volunteers as Teachers (for all subject and languages, arts and crafts, dance and music, sports and PT, computer and vocational training and for counselling, training, mentoring and coaching and career guidance.
